RESUMO

Staphylococcus aureus in the bloodstream causes high morbidity and mortality, exacerbated by the spread of multidrug-resistant and methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA). We aimed to characterize the circulating lineages of S. aureus from bloodstream infections and the contribution of individual lineages to resistance over time. Here, we generated 852 high-quality short-read draft genome sequences of S. aureus isolates from patient blood cultures in a single hospital from 2010 to 2022. A total of 80 previously recognized sequence types (ST) and five major clonal complexes are present in the population. Two frequently detected lineages, ST5 and ST8 exhibited fluctuating demographic structures throughout their histories. The rise and fall in their population growth coincided with the acquisition of antimicrobial resistance, mobile genetic elements, and superantigen genes, thus shaping the accessory genome structure across the entire population. These results reflect undetected selective events and changing ecology of multidrug-resistant S. aureus in the bloodstream.

Infections, which can prompt neuroinflammation, may be a risk factor for dementia1-5. More information is needed concerning associations across different infections and different dementias, and from longitudinal studies with long follow-ups. This New Zealand-based population register study tested whether infections antedate dementia across three decades. We identified individuals born between 1929 and 1968 and followed them from 1989 to 2019 (n = 1,742,406, baseline age = 21-60 years). Infection diagnoses were ascertained from public hospital records. Dementia diagnoses were ascertained from public hospital, mortality and pharmaceutical records. Relative to individuals without an infection, those with an infection were at increased risk of dementia (hazard ratio 2.93, 95% confidence interval 2.68-3.20). Associations were evident for dementia diagnoses made up to 25-30 years after infection diagnoses. Associations held after accounting for preexisting physical diseases, mental disorders and socioeconomic deprivation. Associations were evident for viral, bacterial, parasitic and other infections, and for Alzheimer's disease and other dementias, including vascular dementia. Preventing infections might reduce the burden of neurodegenerative conditions.

Staphylococcus aureus is a ubiquitous commensal and opportunistic bacterial pathogen that can cause a wide gamut of infections, which are exacerbated by the presence of multidrug-resistant and methicillin-resistant S. aureus. S. aureus is genetically heterogeneous and consists of numerous distinct lineages. Using 558 complete genomes of S. aureus, we aim to determine how the accessory genome content among phylogenetic lineages of S. aureus is structured and has evolved. Bayesian hierarchical clustering identified 10 sequence clusters, of which seven contained major sequence types (ST 1, 5, 8, 30, 59, 239, and 398). The seven sequence clusters differed in their accessory gene content, including genes associated with antimicrobial resistance and virulence. Focusing on the two largest clusters, BAPS8 and BAPS10, and each consisting mostly of ST5 and ST8, respectively, we found that the structure and connected components in the co-occurrence networks of accessory genomes varied between them. These differences are explained, in part, by the variation in the rates at which the two sequence clusters gained and lost accessory genes, with the highest rate of gene accumulation occurring recently in their evolutionary histories. We also identified a divergent group within BAPS10 that has experienced high gene gain and loss early in its history. Together, our results show highly variable and dynamic accessory genomes in S. aureus that are structured by the history of the specific lineages that carry them.IMPORTANCEStaphylococcus aureus is an opportunistic, multi-host pathogen that can cause a variety of benign and life-threatening infections. Our results revealed considerable differences in the structure and evolution of the accessory genomes of major lineages within S. aureus. Such genomic variation within a species can have important implications on disease epidemiology, pathogenesis of infection, and interactions with the vertebrate host. Our findings provide important insights into the underlying genetic basis for the success of S. aureus as a highly adaptable and resistant pathogen, which will inform current efforts to control and treat staphylococcal diseases.

There is increasing interest in the potential long-term outcomes of participation in contact and collision sports, driven by evidence of higher rates of neurodegenerative diseases among former athletes. Recent research has capitalised on large-scale administrative health data to examine health outcomes in contact sport athletes. However, there is limited research on outcomes associated with participation in rugby union, a contact sport with a relatively high incidence of head trauma and musculoskeletal injuries. Additionally, there is scope to investigate a greater range of health outcomes using large, population-based administrative data. The Kumanu Tangata project is a retrospective cohort study that will use linked information from the New Zealand Rugby Register and health records within a comprehensive deidentified whole-population administrative research database known as the Integrated Data Infrastructure. First-class male rugby union players (N=13 227) will be compared with a general population comparison group (N=2 438 484; weighting will be applied due to demographic differences) on a range of mortality and morbidity outcomes (neurodegenerative diseases, musculoskeletal conditions, chronic physical conditions, mental health outcomes). A range of player-specific variables will also be investigated as risk factors. Analyses will consist primarily of Cox proportional hazards models. Ethics approval for the study has been granted by the Auckland Health Research Ethics Committee (Ref. AH23203). Primary research dissemination will be via peer-reviewed journal articles.

PURPOSE: Hydrocephalus is a brain disease prevalent in the pediatric population that presents complex pathophysiology and multiple etiologies. The best treatment is still ventricular shunting. Mechanical obstruction is the most frequent complication, but the resulting pathological effects are still unknown. OBJECTIVE: Evaluation and comparison of clinical, histopathological, and immunohistochemical aspects in the acute phase of experimental hydrocephalus induced by kaolin, after treatment with adapted shunt, and after shunt obstruction and posterior disobstruction. METHODS: Wistar rats aged 7 days were used and divided into 4 groups: control group without kaolin injection (n = 6), untreated hydrocephalic group (n = 5), hydrocephalic group treated with ventriculosubcutaneous shunt (DVSC) (n = 7), and hydrocephalic group treated with shunt, posteriorly obstructed and disobstructed (n = 5). The animals were submitted to memory and spatial learning evaluation through the Morris water maze test. The rats were sacrificed at 28 days of age and histological analysis of the brains was performed with luxol fast blue, in addition to immunohistochemical analysis in order to evaluate reactive astrocytosis, inflammation, neuronal labeling, and apoptotic activity. RESULTS: The group with shunt obstruction had worse performance in memory tests. Reactive astrocytosis was more evident in this group, as was the inflammatory response. CONCLUSIONS: Obstruction of the shunt results in impaired performance of behavioral tests and causes irreversible histopathological changes when compared to findings in the group with treated hydrocephalus, even after unblocking the system. The developed model is feasible and efficient in simulating the clinical context of shunt dysfunction.

AIM: To assess quality of life (QoL) in patients with parasagittal meningiomas (PSM), and to identify the risk factors for different levels of QoL. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Patients were contacted and interviewed via telephone. A total of 136 patients with PSM underwent surgery at our institution between 1984 and 2020. Among them, 45 had agreed to participate in the research. The scales utilized included the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy General (FACT-G), Brain (FACT-Br), and Meningioma (FACT-MNG). Medical records were also reviewed. RESULTS: The mean KPS was 93.3 (70-100). Overall, the mean scores for the FACT-G, FACT-Br, and FACT-MNG scales were 98.4/108 (55-108; SD: 12.9), 179.3/200 (98-200; SD: 22.4), and 219.3 (119-248; SD: 29.7). Considerable variability in scales scores was observed among those with the same KPS score. Preoperative KPS score was significantly associated with both FACT-Br [-21.64; 95% CrI (-34.04, -9.59)] and FACT-MNG [-31.88; 95% CrI (-47.24, -15.25)]. Preoperative KPS was identified as a risk factor for QoL impairment. CONCLUSION: Variability in the scale scores among those with the same KPS score highlights the importance of structured assessment. Moreover, KPS may overlook impairments in QoL. To date, this has been the first study to assess QoL in PSM patients.

BACKGROUND: Deaths from suicides, drug poisonings, and alcohol-related diseases ('deaths of despair') are well-documented among working-age Americans, and have been hypothesized to be largely specific to the U.S. However, support for this assertion-and associated policies to reduce premature mortality-requires tests concerning these deaths in other industrialized countries, with different institutional contexts. We tested whether the concentration and accumulation of health and social disadvantage forecasts deaths of despair, in New Zealand and Denmark. METHODS: We used nationwide administrative data. Our observation period was 10 years (NZ = July 2006-June 2016, Denmark = January 2007-December 2016). We identified all NZ-born and Danish-born individuals aged 25-64 in the last observation year (NZ = 1 555 902, Denmark = 2 541 758). We ascertained measures of disadvantage (public-hospital stays for physical- and mental-health difficulties, social-welfare benefit-use, and criminal convictions) across the first nine years. We ascertained deaths from suicide, drugs, alcohol, and all other causes in the last year. RESULTS: Deaths of despair clustered within a population segment that disproportionately experienced multiple disadvantages. In both countries, individuals in the top 5% of the population in multiple health- and social-service sectors were at elevated risk for deaths from suicide, drugs, and alcohol, and deaths from other causes. Associations were evident across sex and age. CONCLUSIONS: Deaths of despair are a marker of inequalities in countries beyond the U.S. with robust social-safety nets, nationwide healthcare, and strong pharmaceutical regulations. These deaths cluster within a highly disadvantaged population segment identifiable within health- and social-service systems.

Hydrocephalus is a neurological condition with altered cerebrospinal fluid flow (CSF). The treatment is surgical and the most commonly used procedure is ventricle-peritoneal shunt. However, not all patients can undergo immediate surgery or achieve complete lesion reversal. Neuroprotective measures are valuable in such cases. It was evaluated whether the use of celecoxib, a selective inhibitor of COX-2, associated or not with ventricular-subcutaneous derivation, could offer benefits to the brain structures affected by experimental hydrocephalus. Seven-day-old male Wistar Hannover rats induced by intracisternal injection of kaolin 15% were used, divided into five groups with ten animals each: intact control (C), untreated hydrocephalus (H), hydrocephalus treated with celecoxib 20 mg/kg intraperitoneal (HTC), hydrocephalus treated with shunt (HTS) and hydrocephalus treated with shunt and celecoxib 20 mg/kg intraperitoneal (HTCS). Celecoxib was administered for 21 consecutive days, starting the day after hydrocephalus induction and continuing until the end of the experimental period. The surgery was performed seven days after inducing hydrocephalus. Multiple assessment methods were used, such as behavioral tests (water maze and open field), histological analysis (hematoxylin and eosin), immunohistochemistry (caspase-3, COX-2, and GFAP), and ELISA analysis of GFAP. The results of the behavioral and memory tests indicated that celecoxib improves the neurobehavioral response. The improvement can be attributed to the reduced neuroinflammation (p < 0.05), and astrogliosis (p < 0.05) in different brain regions. In conclusion, the results suggest that celecoxib holds great potential as an adjuvant neuroprotective drug for the treatment of experimental hydrocephalus.

Klebsiella oxytoca is an opportunistic pathogen causing serious nosocomial infections. Knowledge about the population structure and diversity of healthcare-associated K. oxytoca from a genomic standpoint remains limited. Here, we characterized the phylogenetic relationships and genomic characteristics of 20 K. oxytoca sensu stricto isolates recovered from bloodstream infections at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, New Hampshire, USA from 2017 to 2021. Results revealed a diverse population consisting of 15 sequence types (STs) that together harbored 10 variants of the intrinsic beta-lactamase gene bla OXY-2, conferring resistance to penicillins. Similar sets of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) determinants reside in multiple distinct lineages, with no one lineage dominating the local population. To place the New Hampshire K. oxytoca in a broader context, we compared them to 304 publicly available genomes of clinical isolates from 18 countries. This global clinical K. oxytoca sensu stricto population is represented by over 65 STs that together harbored resistance genes against 14 antimicrobial classes, including eight bla OXY-2 variants. Three dominant STs in the global population (ST2, ST176, ST199) circulate across multiple countries and were also present in the New Hampshire population. The global K. oxytoca population is genetically diverse, but there is evidence for broad dissemination of a few lineages carrying distinct set of AMR determinants. Our findings reveal the clinical diversity of K. oxytoca sensu stricto and its importance in surveillance efforts aimed at monitoring the evolution of this drug-resistant nosocomial pathogen. IMPORTANCE The opportunistic pathogen Klebsiella oxytoca has been increasingly implicated in patient morbidity and mortality worldwide, including several outbreaks in healthcare settings. The emergence and spread of antimicrobial resistant strains exacerbate the disease burden caused by this species. Our study showed that clinical K. oxytoca sensu stricto is phylogenetically diverse, harboring various antimicrobial resistance determinants and bla OXY-2 variants. Understanding the genomic and population structure of K. oxytoca is important for international initiatives and local epidemiological efforts for surveillance and control of drug-resistant K. oxytoca.

BACKGROUND: Staphylococcus aureus can infect and adapt to multiple host species. However, our understanding of the genetic and evolutionary drivers of its generalist lifestyle remains inadequate. This is particularly important when considering local populations of S. aureus, where close physical proximity between bacterial lineages and between host species may facilitate frequent and repeated interactions between them. Here, we aim to elucidate the genomic differences between human- and animal-derived S. aureus from 437 isolates sampled from disease cases in the northeast region of the United States. RESULTS: Multi-locus sequence typing revealed the existence of 75 previously recognized sequence types (ST). Our population genomic analyses revealed heterogeneity in the accessory genome content of three dominant S. aureus lineages (ST5, ST8, ST30). Genes related to antimicrobial resistance, virulence, and plasmid types were differentially distributed among isolates according to host (human versus non-human) and among the three major STs. Across the entire population, we identified a total of 1,912 recombination events that occurred in 765 genes. The frequency and impact of homologous recombination were comparable between human- and animal-derived isolates. Low-frequency STs were major donors of recombined DNA, regardless of the identity of their host. The most frequently recombined genes (clfB, aroA, sraP) function in host infection and virulence, which were also frequently shared between the rare lineages. CONCLUSIONS: Taken together, these results show that frequent but variable patterns of recombination among co-circulating S. aureus lineages, including the low-frequency lineages, that traverse host barriers shape the structure of local gene pool and the reservoir of host-associated genetic variants. Our study provides important insights to the genetic and evolutionary factors that contribute to the ability of S. aureus to colonize and cause disease in multiple host species. Our study highlights the importance of continuous surveillance of S. aureus circulating in different ecological host niches and the need to systematically sample from them. These findings will inform development of effective measures to control S. aureus colonization, infection, and transmission across the One Health continuum.

BACKGROUND: Antenatal exposure to both antidepressants and maternal depression has been associated with child behavioural difficulties. However, previous research has not adequately distinguished between the effects of the antidepressants and the underlying maternal depression. METHODS: Child behavioural difficulties were assessed using the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire at 2-, 4.5-, and 8-years of age by mothers in the Growing Up in New Zealand study (N = 6233 at 2-years; N = 6066 at 4.5-years; N = 4632 at 8-years). Mothers were classified as either on antidepressants, unmedicated depression, or neither based on self-reported antidepressant intake during pregnancy and the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale. Hierarchical multiple logistic regressions were used to examine whether antenatal exposure to antidepressants and unmedicated depression had a differential association with child behavioural outcomes relative to no exposure. RESULTS: When later life depression in the mother and a range of birth and sociodemographic variables were accounted for, neither antenatal exposure to unmedicated depression or antidepressants remained associated with an increased risk of behavioural difficulties at the ages investigated. However, maternal later life depression was associated with behavioural difficulties in the fully adjusted analyses at all three ages investigated. LIMITATIONS: The current study relied on mother-report of child behaviour which may be susceptible to bias due to maternal mental health problems. CONCLUSIONS: Adjusted results did not show an adverse association between antenatal antidepressant exposure or unmedicated depression in relation to child behaviour. Findings also suggest that efforts to improve child behaviour need to include more family-based approaches that support maternal wellbeing.

Introdução: durante a permanência em Unidades de Terapia Intensiva (UTIs), os pacientes internados apresentam maior vulnerabilidade a alterações na cavidade oral decorrentes do uso de equipamentos de respiração artificial e do estado imunocomprometido em que se encontram. Objetivo: identificar as principais manifestações bucais em pacientes internados em uma UTI bem como verificar o conhecimento dos profissionais responsáveis pela higienização bucal. Metodologia: trata-se de um estudo quantitativo descritivo com delineamento transversal. Os dados foram obtidos nos prontuários médicos dos pacientes e através de um exame clínico intraoral. Para os profissionais responsáveis pela higiene bucal, foi utilizado um questionário. As análises foram realizadas no programa SPSS versão 21.0 de forma descritiva. Resultados: as manifestações bucais com maior incidência foram saburra lingual, biofilme dentário, candidíase, devido a qualidade da higiene bucal prestada e a baixa imunidade. Os achados bucais e sistêmicos relacionados aos pacientes com maior tempo de internação foram ressecamento labial, queilite angular, língua despapilada, candidíase e pneumonia. Todos os profissionais responsáveis pela higienização bucal dos pacientes tinham formação técnica em enfermagem e desconheciam alterações importantes como biofilme dentário e pneumonia nosocomial. Conclusão: os dados deste estudo permitem concluir que apesar da constância com que é realizada a higienização bucal, verifica-se alta frequência de lesões bucais nos pacientes críticos da UTI. Evidenciando o papel da assistência da higienização bucal de qualidade, destacando a importância da atuação do cirurgião dentista em equipes multiprofissionais, visto que o risco de focos infecciosos bucais pode contribuir para o agravo e piora do quadro clínico dos pacientes.


Introduction: during the stay in Intensive Care Units (ICUs), hospitalized patients are more vulnerable to changes in the oral cavity resulting from the use of artificial respiration equipment and the immunocompromised state in which they are found. Objective: to identify the main oral manifestations in patients admitted to an ICU, as well as to verify the knowledge of professionals responsible for oral hygiene. Methodology: this is a descriptive quantitative study with cross-sectional design. Data were obtained from the patient's medical records and through an intraoral clinical examination. For professionals responsible for oral hygiene, a questionnaire was used. The analyses were performed in the SPSS version 21.0 program in a descriptive way. Results: the oral manifestations with the highest incidence were tongue coating, dental biofilm, candidiasis, due to the quality of oral hygiene provided and low immunity. Oral and systemic findings related to patients with longer hospital stays were lip dryness, angular cheilitis, depapilated tongue, candidiasis and pneumonia. All professionals responsible for oral hygiene of patients had technical training in nursing and were unaware of important alterations such as dental biofilm and nosocomial pneumonia. Conclusion: the data from this study allow us to conclude that despite the constancy with which oral hygiene is performed, there is a high frequency of oral lesions in critical ICU patients. Evidencing the role of quality oral hygiene assistance, highlighting the importance of the dentist's role in multidisciplinary teams, since the risk of oral infectious foci can contribute to the aggravation and worsening of the clinical condition of patients.

Coagulase-negative Staphylococcus (CoNS) are opportunistic pathogens implicated in many human and animal infections. The evolutionary history of CoNS remains obscure because of the historical lack of recognition for their clinical importance and poor taxonomic sampling. Here, we sequenced the genomes of 191 CoNS isolates representing 15 species sampled from diseased animals diagnosed in a veterinary diagnostic laboratory. We found that CoNS are important reservoirs of diverse phages, plasmids and mobilizable genes encoding antimicrobial resistance, heavy metal resistance, and virulence. Frequent exchange of DNA between certain donor-recipient partners suggests that specific lineages act as hubs of gene sharing. We also detected frequent recombination between CoNS regardless of their animal host species, indicating that ecological barriers to horizontal gene transfer can be surmounted in co-circulating lineages. Our findings reveal frequent but structured patterns of transfer that exist within and between CoNS species, which are driven by their overlapping ecology and geographical proximity.

OBJECTIVE: To examine criminal justice system (CJS) interactions and pathways through the justice system for young adults with ADHD compared to young adults without ADHD. METHOD: Nationwide 3-year birth cohort study using linked health and CJS data. Cox proportional hazards models were employed to examine associations between ADHD and police proceedings, court charges, court convictions, and incarcerations. RESULTS: Young adults with ADHD were significantly more likely to interact with the CJS including police proceedings (hazard ratio [HR], 2.1 95% CI [2.0, 2.2]) court charges (HR, 2.2 95% CI [2.1, 2.3]), court convictions (HR, 2.3 95% CI [2.2, 2.4]), and incarceration (HR, 4.8 95% CI [4.3, 5.4]). CONCLUSIONS: Young adults with ADHD are overrepresented at all stages of the CJS. Results highlight the importance of early identification and responsivity to ADHD within the CJS and suggest that the NZ justice system may require changes to both areas to ensure that young individuals with ADHD receive equitable access to, and treatment within, the CJS.

RESUMO

We report the draft genome sequences of four Enterococcus cecorum strains obtained from cloacal swab specimens collected from three healthy captive wild birds (two Coragyps atratus and one Parabuteo unicinctus) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The genome sizes ranged from 2.38 to 2.55 Mb.

Microbes frequently encounter heavy metals and other toxic compounds generated from natural biogeochemical processes and anthropogenic activities. Here, we analyzed the prevalence and association of genes conferring resistance to heavy metals, biocides, and antimicrobial compounds in 394 genome sequences of clinical human-derived S. enterica from New Hampshire, USA. The most prevalent was the gold operon (gesABC-golTSB), which was present in 99.2% of the genomes. In contrast, the other five heavy metal operons (arsenic, copper, mercury, silver, tellurite) were present in 0.76% (3/394)-5.58% (22/394) of the total population. The heavy metal operons and three biocide resistance genes were differentially distributed across 15 sequence types (STs) and 16 serotypes. The number of heavy metal operons and biocide resistance genes per genome was significantly associated with high number of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) genes per genome. Notable is the mercury operon which exhibited significant association with genes conferring resistance to aminoglycosides, cephalosporins, diaminopyrimidine, sulfonamide, and fosfomycin. The mercury operon was co-located with the AMR genes aac(3)-IV, ant(3")-IIa, aph(3')-Ia, and aph(4)-Ia, CTX-M-65, dfrA14, sul1, and fosA3 genes within the same plasmid types. Lastly, we found evidence for negative selection of individual genes of each heavy metal operon and the biocide resistance genes (dN/dS < 1). Our study highlights the need for continued surveillance of S. enterica serotypes that carry those genes that confer resistance to heavy metals and biocides that are often associated with mobile AMR genes. The selective pressures imposed by heavy metals and biocides on S. enterica may contribute to the co-selection and spread of AMR in human infections.

AIMS: To investigate whether tamariki Maori screened for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) concerns in the B4 School Check (B4SC) between 2011 to 2018 are as likely to receive ADHD medication as non-Maori children. METHODS: Using population-level data from the Integrated Data Infrastructure, we investigated whether ADHD medication dispensing differed for tamariki Maori screened for ADHD concerns relative to non-Maori children. Analyses were also stratified by area-level deprivation and urban/rural profile of residence. RESULTS: In our cohort of 414,171 children, 2.8% of Maori and 1.6% of non-Maori were screened as showing ADHD concerns. Among those with ADHD concerns, tamariki Maori had a lower likelihood of ADHD medication dispensing following the B4SC (10.8%) relative to non-Maori children (14.9%), but this effect was only significant among those living in the most deprived quintile and outside of major urban areas. CONCLUSION: Our study indicates that inequities to accessing ADHD treatment may exist for tamariki Maori living in highly deprived neighbourhoods or outside of major urban areas. Further research is needed to understand what the specific barriers may be to accessing ADHD medication treatment for Maori in these areas.

RESUMO

Mammaliicoccus sciuri (previously Staphylococcus sciuri) is a frequent colonizer of mammals. We report the draft genomes of a methicillin-resistant strain (2254A) isolated from an armadillo and a methicillin-susceptible strain (6942A) from a cow. Genomes were sequenced using long-read Nanopore sequencing.

Abstract Introduction Bone conduction implants, responsible for transmitting sound from an external processor to the inner ear, can be divided into active and passive, depending on the vibratory stimulus location. The use of transcutaneous device has increased, given its aesthetic appeal, the complications and limitations of percutaneous devices, and patient's treatment adherence, focusing mainly on efficacy. However, various complications are associated with the use of transcutaneous prosthesis, which can often be serious. Objective To approach the literature on complications involving transcutaneous bone-anchored prostheses through a systematic review of articles published in the past 10 years (2011-2021). Data Synthesis The MEDLINE, EMBASE, Scopus, and Cochrane Library databases were searched. All articles written in English reporting on currently available transcutaneous prosthesis implantation and its complications were selected. Studies on both children and adults were included. The data on complications were extracted, and complications were classified as minor or major and associated to each device used. Thirty-seven articles were included in the study, of which 14 were prospective cohort studies, 22 were retrospective case series, and 1 was a case report. Most studies (18) included both adults and children. Moreover, 901 implantations were performed, of which 552 implanted Baha Attract (Cochlear Ltd., Sydney, Australia), 244 implanted BoneBridge (MED-EL, Innsbruck, Austria), and 105 implanted Sophono (Sophono Inc., Boulder, CO, USA]). Furthermore, 192 adverse events were reported (total complication rate, 21.3%), with 161 minor complications (84.3%) and 31 major complications (16.1%). Conclusion Transcutaneous prosthesis is an audiological alternative with fewer complications than percutaneous prosthesis. However, its indication should be judicious because complications are common, and although most complications are minor, serious infections requiring explantation may develop.
